We Rebuilt Tank 1990 — Play It Free in Your Browser

March 15, 2026

If you grew up anywhere in Southeast Asia during the late 80s or 90s, you didn’t play “Battle City.” You played Tank 1990.

The cartridge just said TANK 1990 — jammed into a yellow Famicom clone alongside 9,998 other “games” on some 9999-in-1 multicart from the pasar malam. Most of us never knew the original name.

Tank 1990 was actually an unofficial version of Battle City, originally developed and published by Namco in 1985 for the Famicom. The gameplay, the design, the magic — all Namco. Tank 1990 just happened to be the version that spread across Asia and became the one we all remember.

What This Is

A browser-based tribute to Stage 1 of the original Battle City. Not a perfect replica — just a fan-made recreation built out of respect for a game that shaped our childhoods.

All intellectual property for Battle City belongs to Bandai Namco.

How We Made It

A quick experiment with AI-assisted development. One HTML file, no frameworks, runs entirely in your browser.

Share the Nostalgia

If you remember blowing into cartridges and arguing over who gets Player 1 — share this with someone who gets it.
